It premiered at Covent Garden in 1778, though Hook added new songs in 1788 and revised the score between 1815 and 1817, resulting in a second premiere at Drury Lane in 1818.
This piano reduction of the overture was likely published shortly after the opera's premiere in 1778, when the score was issued in parts as Hook's Op. 20.

The periodical counted around 700 subscribers in advance of its first issue in 1927, but that number plummeted to 350 when that issue appeared, much to Cowell's dismay. Ives, however, was so taken with the enterprise that he submitted a check for an additional 25 subscriptions. Cowell called Ives to offer his personal thanks, and, after examining some of Ives' works, offered to publish them in New Music.
Ives demurred at first, doubting that the series was truly non-commercial, but eventually changed his tune. He offered some of his scores to Cowell on the condition that he (Ives) would pay for all of the production costs. Because Ives had only self-published before, New Music effectively became his first publisher, and his music was the feature of several early issues beginning in 1929. This volume of songs marks the third time his works appeared in the publication.
Arthur Cohn was a publisher, conductor, composer, and orchestrator as well as the longtime Director of the publishing company Carl Fisher, where he was responsible for publishing many of Ives's works. He was also director of the Edwin Fleischer Collection in Philadelphia from 1934-52.This second edition lists the same publication month and year (October 1933) as the first edition. While we have not been able to determine the reason for this (the publication history of New Music has yet to be thoroughly researched), it is possible that New Music quickly produced the second edition owing to the issue’s popularity.

Because this score has no lyrics but includes indications such as hurdy-gurdy imitation and bassoons, it may have been intended for the orchestrator, who, in this case, was the illustrious Robert Russell Bennett. Perhaps it was considered for use in the entr'acte prior to the second act.
Since we acquired this manuscript with other material associated with the premiere of Music in the Air, we are confident it was used in some capacity for the show's highly successful opening on November 8, 1932.

The music is presented in Law's own system of shape-note notation, which he hopes will open, at once, an improved pathway to the practice of music. This volume, though called the fourth edition on its title page, is indeed a third edition, Law having wanted the printing to seem more "up-to-date" for potential buyers.
Despite multiple printings that included, as this edition does, additions and improvements, Law's shape-note notation never quite caught on, as proponents of the approach already favored the earlier shape-note scheme devised by William Little and William Smith.
Andrew Law was among the foremost American musicians of his day, traveling throughout New England as a singing teacher and minister. He founded schools of music and singing in Philadelphia, Boston, New York, and Charleston, and earned much success with his pedagogical publications and tunebook compilations. His first edited collection of sacred tunes was the first of its time to feature American and English music in equal proportion. - Law, Andrew (1740-1821) The Musical Primer; containing the Rules of Psalmody, newly revised and improved: together, with a number of practical Lessons and Plain Tunes, designed expressly for the use of Learners. This attractive and scarce copy of The Musical Primer is a first edition. It was later repurposed as the second part of the compilation of pedagogical writings that Law published under the title The Art of Singing a year later in 1794.
As the Advertisement on the verso of the title page states, Andrew Law intended this little method for beginners: A book, that might be obtained with little expence, and be suitable for learners at their first setting out, has been frequently called for. Such an one [sic] is the following. The rules, comprised in it, are explained with the utmost conciseness and simplicity. If the learner, upon purusing them and practicing upon the additional lessons, and tune, finds that he is like to succeed as a singer, he may safely venture to purchase other music; if not, he may relinquish his book and his undertaking together, without much loss of time or money.
Law begins with brief introductions to diction, clefs, modes, meter, and dynamics. He then presents the keys and scales and dedicates a number of pages to reading music, focusing mostly on rhythm and meter. The method concludes with nine pages of psalm tunes set for four voices. (Psalm tunes were melodies, popular in Anglican and early American worship, used for the singing of psalm texts that had been recast in the poetic meters.) Among those tunes that Law includes are the famous Windsor melody and one entitled Litchfield -- which, in taking the spelling of the American town rather than that of the English (Lichfield), likely originated in Law's home state of Connecticut.
