Lalo admired von Bülow and even solicited his opinion when it came time to title the Symphonie espagnole. Von Bülow's approval of it meant a great deal to Lalo, who deeply respected German musical tradition.
Lalo's two-act ballet Namouna premiered at the Théâtre de l'Opéra on March 6, 1882. The teenage Debussy was in attendance; his applause was so raucous the theater temporarily banned him and his friends. Chabrier was also so taken with the work that he repeatedly asked Lalo for a copy of the score. This suite premiered the following year under Charles Lamoureux.
