Johann André: Offenbach am Main, 1808. Pl.n: 2601. Quarto. 60 pp. Contemporary half-bound leather with marbled paper boards. Red leather title box with gilt tooling on front. Overall a good, crisp copy internally. Some light foxing throughout (heavier on title page). Water stain affecting top right corner of each page, but all text easily legible. German-born A. F. C. Kollmann served as chapel-keeper of London's Royal German Chapel from 1784 and became the first real proponent of J. S. Bach's music in England. He published several music theory treatises, many of which foreground Bach's music, and may have been the first translator of Forkel's famous Bach biography into English. Of this thorough bass treatise, a contemporary reviewer extolled: This work, the utility of which will be obvious to every musical reader, is conducted in that methodical and systematic plan for which all Mr. Kollmann's didactic publications are distinguished.
