Gallot, Jacques (c. 1625-1695)
Portrait of a Lutenist
18th century. 12" h x 9" w. In very good condition. The attribution on the etching states it is by Robert Brichet (fl. 1775-1790) after a portrait by sixteenth-century artist Anthony Van Dyck. That portrait has since been reattributed to Flemish painter Jan van Reyn (c. 1610-1678) and its subject identified as lutenist and composer Jacques Gallot (1625-1695). The portrait was painted c. 1640 and is currently in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The caption, Du Cabinet de Mr. Poullain, references an art catalog published in Paris in 1781.
