PAGANINI - SILHOUETTE
Silhouette.
19th century, with period frame. c. 8.75" h x 6.75" w. Silhouette in very good condition. Frame with a few nicks and scratches, mostly along the sides but not facing the viewer. A nice presentation. This English engraved portrait is a nice example of one the most famous and most reproduced images of Paganini, originally produced by the French-born artist Augustin Edouart (1789-1861), the leading nineteenth-century artist of portrait silhouettes. He made several silhouettes of Paganini, having traveled to Edinburgh to Paganini's concert on Oct. 22, 1831, writing in his treatise "Having omitted to speak of the celebrated Signor Paganini--I here present his Likeness, taken at Edinburgh, in October, 1832 [sic.] to which City I went from Glasgow, where I was established, for the sole purpose of obtaining it. It has been universally approved of, the Signor was much pleased when I presented it to him, and assured me at the same time, it was the first Likeness of himself, that was not caricatured."
