ENGLISH CARICATURE - PIANO

Gillray, James (1757-1815)

Playing in Parts.

London, May 15, 1801. Total size in mat: 16" h x 20" w. In very good condition. Trimmed a bit close; very small tear at bottom right corner and minor smudge at upper right. First state with original hand-coloring.
An amusing hand-colored etching by Gillray. After a drawing by Brownlow North and published by Hannah Humphrey.

Gillray pokes fun of an amateur pianist, who sits at the center poised to bang on the keys of her instrument. Four men with exaggerated features accompany her on the cello, flute, and violin, while the attendees in the background pay more attention to one another than to the music. A small brown dog sits with his paw on an open score in the bottom right corner, scratching his ear in what can only be a disgruntled response to the whole scene.

The leading satirist of his generation, James Gillray was a British caricaturist and printmaker known for his poltical and social scenes, of which this print is highly typical. This image is fairly scarce.
