Liszt, Franz (1811-1886)

Engraved Portrait with Facsimile Signature.

Breitkopf & Härtel: Leipzig, not before 1854. 17" h x 12.5" w. In very good condition, just a tiny bit rumpled at bottom.
A beautiful, large engraving of Ernst Rietschel's Liszt medallion of 1854, with Liszt's facsimile signature beneath. Uncommon.

At the time Rietschel made the relief, Liszt was 43 and settled in Weimar, where he acted as the court kapellmeister, organized festivals celebrating Berlioz and Wagner, produced the premiere of Lohengrin, and took on several pupils, including his future son-in-law, Hans von Bülow.

Ernst Rietschel (1804-1861) was a celebrated German sculptor whose work included the famous Goethe-Schiller monument in Weimar and the Weber monument in Dresden.
