FLUTE - FRENCH CARICATURE

Gavarni, Paul (1804-1866)

Paris, mid 19th century. Total size in mat: 17" h x 14" w (43 cm x 35.5 cm). A bit foxed at margins, but otherwise very good.
A lithographic three-quarter portrait of a man playing a flute, belonging to the series Musiciens Comiques ou Pittoresques that ran in the Parisian music periodical Revue et Gazette Musicale.
The Revue et Gazette Musicale was the first French-language journal devoted entirely to classical music. It was published from 1835 to 1880 and counted as its founders musicologist François-Joseph Fétis and music publisher Maurice Schlesinger.

Paul Gavarni was a highly successful French illustrator whose work was often featured in the popular magazine Le Charivari.
