Clementi was a pianist in every possible sense of the word: he was a virtuoso, invited by Joseph II to a "keyboard duel" with Mozart; he composed and transcribed works and methods for the piano, then published them at his own publishing house; he manufactured his own instruments in London; and he taught some of the best emerging pianists of his day, including Cramer, Moscheles, Hummel, and Field.
