"AUDITUS" WITH LUTE

Antwerp, mid-17th century: 1640/1660. Total size of print: 7" h x 9.75" w. Total size in mat: 14" h x 17" w. Overall in very good condition and a fine impression. Trimmed to just within the plate, eliminating Collaert's name on the bottom as well as the text line. Unobtrusive repair to minor tear at bottom. Small mark to Auditus' nose.
A handsome engraving by Adriaen Collaert (c. 1560-1618) after Maerten de Vos (1532-1603). Auditus, representing "hearing", plays a lute in the forest, accompanied by a deer to her left. A pile of stringed instruments and a salamander sit at her feet while birds listen above and beneath her. The figures on the right are Adam and Eve, representing repentance, and the figure on the left is John the Baptist, shown preaching. (Christ is also supposedly included in the audience).
