PHYLLIS WITH VIOLIN

Engraving.

Dutch, mid-17th century. Matted with a total size of 18" h x 13.75" w. Excellent condition.Trimmed to the plate.
Important depiction of a Baroque bow.

A fine example of this rare engraving which is not only delightful but important as a depiction of a 17th-century violin and bow.

An exquisite engraving by Therodor Matham (1689-1676) after Adriaen van de Venne (1689-1662). A female identified as Phyllis is shown half-length playing a violin, holding it against her breastbone. She is in an oval within an elaborate frame of putti, fruits, rabbits, and dogs. Under the portrait are three columns of Dutch verse and production details. The violin is accurately depicted (note the pegs), but of particular interest is the finely drawn bow and her hand position.
