PIANOFORTE - ENGLISH CARICATURE
Rowlandson, Thomas (1857-1827)
"A Musical Doctor and his Scholars".
London. Total size in mat: 20.5" h x 18.25" w. In very good condition. A few creases. Wide margins at bottom, left, and right; top margin unevenly trimmed, mostly to plate edge.An amusing Georgian caricature showing a "musical doctor" seated at a pianoforte, his mouth agape and his arm raised to direct a group of young singers to his right, some of whom seem to be singing at the top of their lungs. At the floor to the doctor's left sit an overflowing tankard of beer and a singing cat, who looks humorously at the viewer.
The famed English caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson was best known for his social satires. His prints, much like those of his friend and fellow draughtsman James Gillray, are often comic and bawdy, showing subjects with exaggerated features.
