Unsigned. Total measurement in frame: 19"h x 15.5" w. In a decorative wooden frame. Photograph & frame in excellent condition; mat is slightly soiled.
A stunning photograph, nicely framed and an uncommon image, of the universally-praised Russian pianist couple. Josef Lhévinne is shown pointing out something in a score at the piano where his wife Rosinna is playing. This photograph was owned by the accomplished pianist Martin Canin who graduated from Juilliard in 1956, where he studied under the piano pedagogue Rosina Lhévinne and served as her assistant until he joined the faculty himself in 1976.

The Russian pianist Rosina Lhévinne (1880-1976) was renowned as a pedagogue. She gave up her ambitions as a soloist in order to avoid clashing with her husband Josef's career, although she continued to concertize with him in two-piano recitals until his death. She and her husband emigrated after the Russian Revolution to Tbilisi, then to Berlin and finally to New York in 1919 where they both joined the faculty at the Institute of Musical Art which later became Juilliard.

Josetf Lhévinne (1874-1944) was both a pianist and pedagogue and also the author of Basis Principles in Pianoforte Playing, still considered a classic.
