Two black-and-white photographs of the American pianist taken by noted Vienna-born American photographer Fred Fehl. Kapell is shown at the keyboard, possibly at the Hollywood Bowl.
William Kapell was considered by many the greatest American pianist of the twentieth century. The music world was shocked when he was tragically killed at age 31 in a plane crash. From his initial performances, Kapell's innate musical gifts stirred listeners, attracting a devoted public and the admiration and support of the musical elite. The fervor which Kapell inspired moved individuals to record many of his concert performances which otherwise would not have been preserved.

Fred Fehl was the first person in America to make a career of performance photography, for over forty years he covered Broadway as well as dance, opera, and music. He was the permanent photographer of the American Ballet Theatre, the New York City Opera, and the New York City Ballet.
