Watts, André (1946-2023)
Photograph at Piano.
Likely Hollywood, 1963. 7" h x 5" w. In excellent condition. Unsigned.A wonderful original black-and-white photograph by the eminent Vienna-born American performance photographer Fred Fehl showing a youthful Watts practicing at a Steinway. His head hovers closely over the keys as he raises both his eyebrows and his right hand in anticipation of the next notes. Fehl has written 1963 in pencil on the verso.
This photograph almost certainly shows Watts rehearsing for his first performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, for which he played Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 in September 1963. Watts was then an international star on the rise, and by 1969 he was booking entire concert seasons three years in advance.
PHO-16394$85Fred Fehl was the first person in America to make a career of performance photography, for over forty years he covered Broadway as well as dance, opera, and music. He was the permanent photographer of the American Ballet Theatre, the New York City Opera, and the New York City Ballet.
