Rosina Lhévinne studied at the Moscow Imperial Conservatory and won its gold medal in piano upon her graduation in 1898. She quickly abandoned her own performance aspirations, though, to support those of her husband, Josef, with whom she had studied in school. She then devoted herself to teaching, eventually joining the faculty of The Juilliard School, and instructing such notable names as Van Cliburn and John Williams. Lhévinne would return to performing in the 1950s, her career culminating in 1963 with a performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 -- the piece she had played for her gold medal six decades before! -- in her New York Philharmonic debut under Leonard Bernstein.
