Grainger, Percy (1882-1961)

Photograph with his Mother and Dog.

White Plains, New York, July 17, 1921. 11.25" h x 8.5" w. In excellent condition. Caption at bottom white margin a bit rubbed, but still legible.
A striking original sepia matte photograph of the Australian pianist-composer, seated with his mother and a small dog on the porch of their home in White Plains, New York. The photograph is marked at the bottom Made in Germany.
In 1921, the time of this photograph, Percy Grainger purchased a large house in the New York City suburbs to share with his mother, Rose Aldridge. Though Rose could be overbearing and severe, the pair were very close, and Rose supported her son through his education and early concert career. She was unwell by the time Percy bought the house in White Plains, though, and died just a year later. Grainger would live there until his death in 1961.

The house, which is now known as the Percy Grainger Home and Studio, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
