Photograph.

n.d, likely 1910s. c. 7.5" h x 9.5" w. In very good condition. Someone has written faint numbers atop each person in the second and third rows, which correspond to a names list on the verso. Unsigned.
A rare and original matte black-and-white portrait of a group of early-twentieth-century pianists, photographed before a large portrait of Beethoven, apparently at Steinway & Sons. The group includes: Ernest Schelling, Zygmunt Stojowski, Alexander Lambert, Walter Damrosch, Wilhelm Backhaus, Percy Grainger, Ignaz Friedman, Harold Bauer, Leo Ornstein, Germaine Schnitzer, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Elly Ney, Alfredo Casella, Josef Lhévinne, Ernest Hutcheson, and Ernest Urchs.
Ernest Urchs was a manager at Steinway who oversaw the Concert and Artists Department and the Wholesale Department. He was also one of the people in charge of the company's dealer clients.
