Isidor Philipp was a child prodigy who won first prize at the Conservatoire in 1883. He studied with Georges Mathias (a pupil of Chopin and Kalkbrenner), Saint-Saëns, Stephen Heller, and Théodore Ritter. He went on to enjoy a successful career as a solo pianist, chamber musician, and teacher.

Philipp was a lifelong friend of Claude Debussy's, the pair having met at the Conservatoire as young men. Philipp both performed Debussy's piano works and collaborated with Debussy to ensure they were notated in a way that clearly reflected the composer's intentions. Philipp was thus considered the leading authority on Debussy's music after the composer's death in 1918.

Philipp's collection of instruments, which included both the ancient and the unusual, was stolen by the Nazis after Philipp fled to the United States in 1940. The collection was never recovered.
