Pouishnoff had a rather remarkable start: he studied with Anna Yesipova, Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov, and Tcherepnin at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory alongside fellow students Arthur Rubinstein, Edwin Fischer, and Julius Isserlis -- and after graduating, one of his earliest touring engagements was as Leopold Auer's accompanist. Pouishnoff would quickly become an internationally respected pianist, spending most of his life in the United Kingdom and admired especially for his performances of Chopin. He gave the English premiere of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 4, was among the first to record Schubert's Sonata in G major, D 849, and was the first pianist to broadcast on television.
