Grünfeld, Alfred (1852-1924)

Photograph Signed

"Alfred Grunfeld". To Herrn Concert Direktor Benno Lie. Vienna, October 17, 1920. Total size: c. 11" h x 9" w. Photograph in excellent condition. Mount with repaired tears at either side of portrait and at bottom (affecting part of the inscription); bottom corners docked; trimmed at bit close at top. Nonetheless, a fine portrait.
An ovalized matte portrait of the Austrian pianist, laid down on a mount which he has signed and inscribed in German with a message of friendly thanks to a concert director.
Alfred Grünfeld was the most popular salon pianist in Vienna throughout the 1870s and 1880s, known as much for his playing as for his sociability and humor. When not performing solo, he often appeared with the Arnold Rosé Quartet, Hellmesberger Quartet, and alongside his cellist brother, Heinrich. Grünfeld was also a close friend of Johann Strauss and transcribed several of the composer's waltzes for piano, including the Frühlingsstimmen, which Strauss had dedicated to Grünfeld.
