Egon Petri was a Dutch pianist who grew up in Germany and received early musical training. He began to concentrate on piano at the early encouragement of both Jan Paderewski and Ferruccio Busoni. Petri idolized Busoni, who later became his teacher, and like him, made the music of J. S. Bach and Franz Liszt the core of his repertoire. He would earn a reputation as a fine interpreter of Beethoven and Brahms, as well.

In addition to his active concert career, Petri assisted Busoni with his Bach editions, taught Victor Borge and a host of notable students, and made several recordings for Columbia Records. He escaped Poland the day before the German invasion in September 1939, refusing to perform in Germany thereafter, and later became an American citizen.
