George Frideric Handel’s Six Concertos for the Harpsichord or Organ, published as Opus 4 by John Walsh in 1738, were originally performed by Handel as improvisational interludes during performances of his oratorios at Covent Garden. As per Handel specialist Laurence Cummings, Handel faced financial difficulties that were made all the worse with the arrival of a new opera company whose star was none other than famed castrato Farinelli. In order to compete for attention, Handel showcased himself as a virtuoso composer-performer. These concertos both established the genre of the organ concerto and presented a combination of instruments never before heard at the time.
