HORN - COURTOIS AINÉ NATURAL HORN WITH CROOKS IN CASE
French, c. 1830. Case measures 21" h x 18"w x 12.50+ deep. Overall in very good condition other than a few minor dents and repairs - see photos (use slide bar beneath thumbnails to navigate all 14 photos). A rare fine example.
Certainly a sought-after example, this horn is by Courtois ainé and stamped: ***COURTOIS NEVEU AINE RUE DES VIEUX AUGUSTINS A PARIS***. It has a beautiful chromium bell with decorative red inlay, is complete with all of its crooks and 3 mouthpieces (possibly original?) and in an unusually nice mahogany case with brass handles.
Antoine Courtois began making brass instruments in 1789 in Paris and the family business was established in 1803. The renowned manufacturer of brass instruments continues to this day as one of the brand names of the Buffet Crampon Group.
This instrument was formerly in the possession of William Feder, cellist in the New York Philharmonic under Toscanini.
