Haydn, Franz Joseph (1732-1809)

Compleat Collection of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven's Symphonies, In Score. Haydn's No. IX only [Symphony No. 66 in B-flat Major].

Signed above the title Charles Salaman, 36 Baker St, January 17/63. Cianchettini & Sperati: London, [c 1809, based on publisher's address]. Engraved. Small quarto. 38 pp. Attractively bound in modern white paper wraps with printed label. A nice copy in good condition except for a water stain at inner margin throughout (with limited effect to music); some spotting. Someone has added a Roman numeral IX on the title page.
A nice copy which used to belong to the noted Jewish British pianist Charles Salaman (1814-1901). Salaman was also an organist, writer and composer of more than one hundred settings of Hebrew texts for the West London Synagogue, as well as numerous songs. It is known that he played duets with Liszt as a boy and also that he knew Muzio Clementi. He has identified the music above the title and signed on the upper right, noting his address as well as the date.
The Symphony number IX was composed in 1762, under the auspices of Count Nikolaus Esterházy, Haydn's principal employer.
