Gershwin, George (1898-1937)

Of Thee I Sing.

New World Music: New York, 1932. Pl.n: N.W. 107-198. A reprint of the first edition (which had been issued earlier the same year, 1932). 198 pp. Original paper wraps. In excellent condition. Wraps and spine a little sunned. Pencilled markings scattered throughout indicate that this copy was used for a performance.
A fine copy of Gershwin's most successful stage work, which was first produced in New York on December 26, 1931. It ran for 441 performances, receiving critical and box office success. Brooks Atkinson's original New York Times review called it a taut and lethal satire... funnier than the government, and not nearly so dangerous. In 1932, it became the first musical comedy ever to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
