Thalberg, Sigismond (1812-1871)

L'Art du Chant appliqué au piano. 1.re Série. No. 1. Quatuor de l'Opéra: I Puritani de Bellini. [Op. 70].

Breitkopf & Härtel: Leipzig, [ca 1853]. Pl.n: 8754. Quarto. 9 (music) + 4 (essay). Disbound with pages detaching. Title page with dealer stamp. Pencil markings throughout. Water stain to bottom margin of essay portion (not affecting). Otherwise a very nice and clean copy.
Thalberg composed arrangements of operatic arias to help students develop the ability to execute passagework both cleanly and lyrically, a quality for which his own technique was highly praised. His L'Art du chant appliqué au piano contains 24 such arrangements in total, of which this is the first. Thalberg's essay of the same title (Die Kunst des Gesanges auf dem Pianoforte in German) occupies the last four pages of the edition in both French and English.

Published in or about 1853, based on plate number.
