List, Eugene (1918-1985)

Recital Program.

The White House, July 8, 1969. 7" h x 5" w. 3 pp. In excellent condition.
A program of List's White House recital on July 8, 1969, given in honor of the visiting Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I. The performance included works by Reinagle, Chopin, and Gottschalk.

A particularly attractive program: the blue paper wraps are still held together by an original red cord at the spine, the front cover is embossed with the U.S. seal in silver, and the inner pages have deckled edges.

American pianist Eugene List was no stranger to diplomatic performance: as a young soldier in World War II, he performed before Truman, Churchill, and Stalin at the Potsdam Conference in 1945. Truman himself turned the pages for List when he was asked to play the Chopin Waltz in A-flat, op. 42, but did not have it memorized. Back home, List soon became known as the "Pianist of Presidents" -- a moniker that would stick, as he would perform at the White House many times in the decades after the war.
