Lhevinne, Josef (1874-1944)
Program.
Boston, January 27, [no year]. 10" h x 6" w. In excellent condition. Light horizontal fold; very small tear at bottom (not affecting). Unsigned.A program, with his portrait, for a Boston recital, at which Lhévinne played solo works by Schumann, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Rubinstein, as well as a Rachmaninoff duet with his wife, Rosina.
Russian pianist Josef Lhévinne made his public debut at 14 playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, then went on to study at the Moscow Conservatory in a class that also included Sergei Rachmaninoff and Alexander Scriabin. After marrying Rosina, a fellow pianist, the pair continued to concertize and teach, moving from Russia to Berlin and eventually settling in New York City. Although Lhévinne was a masterful technician, admired even by Horowitz for his command of the keyboard, he preferred teaching to performing.
