Van Cliburn gained international recognition when he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958, a contest that had been designed specifically to prove Soviet superiority during the Cold War. As is stated in this program: It was the competition in Moscow that made the Cliburn name a familiar commodity even in non-musical circles and boosted his career to a point where further biographical data seems superfluous.
