Moriz Rosenthal was an accomplished pianist and pedagogue, well regarded not only for his playing but also for his wit and charm. He was one of Liszt's most outstanding pupils and befriended some of the most eminent musicians of his day: Brahms, Johann Strauss, Anton Rubinstein, von Bülow, and Saint-Saens, to name only a few.
