Ney was a Beethoven specialist whose legacy was tarnished by Nazism. She was quite popular in Germany before the war; Beethoven's birthplace, Bonn, even honored her at the composer's centenary in 1927. But she was outspoken in her support of the Third Reich -- she publicly offered a Hitler salute to Beethoven's bust -- and did not entirely recover her good reputation after the war, despite her eventual renunciation of Hitler. In the late 1940s, the city of Bonn even imposed a stage ban on her that lasted until her death.
