Muhlfeld, Richard (1856-1907)

SIG of the German clarinetist and one of Brahms' favorite musicians on the February 28 square of a birthday book page. Dated 1892. Uncommon

Brahms had decided to give up composing in 1891 but changed his mind after hearing Mülhfeld play. For him Brahms wrote the Clarinet Sonatas, Trio, and Quintet. Mülhfeld premiered the Sonatas with Brahms at the piano and the Trio and Quintet with the Joachim Quartet. Brahms thought very highly of Mülhfeld as a friend, too, and once gifted him a set of monogramed silver teaspoons.
