Steber, Eleanor (1914-1990)
SIG of the American soprano. Album leaf, n.d.; very bold example in black marker. Steber was among the first American-trained opera singers to receive international renown. She sang at the Metropolitan Opera from 1940 to 1961, appeared at the Bayreuth Festival in 1953, and premiered Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (which she herself had commissioned!).
