Pugno, Raoul (1852-1914)
Carte de Visite Signed
"Raoul Pugno" on verso. To Vincent d'Indy. In very good condition. Recto with a little discoloration at bottom right.A very nice association between Pugno and Vincent d'Indy.
The eminent French pianist, who was also a composer, teacher, and organist, has penned a note on both sides of his calling card to composer Vincent d'Indy. He asks for advice about a contralto (whom Duparc has depicted in watercolor) in Monteverdi's Orpheus. He concludes that d'Indy is particularly agreeable to him, with thanks from his devoted admirer.
Pugno was one of the most important French pianists of the late nineteenth century and an important exponent of Mozart, Debussy, and Franck. His partnership with the violinist Eugène Ysaÿe was also long and celebrated.
