NOREN QUOTES STRAUSS
Noren, Heinrich G. (1861-1928)
Autograph Musical Quotation Signed
"Heinrich G. Noren". Dresden, 1907 (1917?). 6" h x 7.50" w.An example of a notorious plagiarism connection.
AMQ-16465$175The Austrian composer/violinist signs his name on an album leaf under an unidentified 7-bar musical quotation. Noren was an admirer of Richard Strauss and quoted, with Strauss' permission, two themes from Ein Heldenleben, but was then accused of plagiarism by Strauss' publisher Leuckart. The lawsuit was ended by a court in Dresden in Noren's favor. The court declared that only melodies were protected by law, and that the quoted themes were not melodies. This judgement was used by satiric writers, most prominently by Edgar Istel, in a parody on the Allgemeiner Deutscher Musikverein, of which Strauss was president.
