"J. J. Abert". Löwenberg, March 18, 1864. 8.25" h x 11.5" w. With hand-drawn staves. In good condition overall. Vertical fold and some light creasing. Minor chips at bottom margin and small tears at right (none affecting), all of which could be easily covered by a mat.A large and very uncommon example from the German double bassist and composer who offers the incipit of each movement of his Columbus symphony, signing and dating with friendly sentiments in German below.
Johann Joseph Abert was appointed a double bassist in the Court Orchestra at Stuttgart in 1853 and became that court's Kapellmeister in 1867. He composed several successful operas and seven symphonies, of which the Columbus was his fourth and most popular. Though overlooked today, Abert was considered in his own time one of the best operatic composers between Meyerbeer and Wagner.
