Nikisch, Arthur (1855-1922)

Ensemble with Autograph Musical Quotation from Beethoven's Fifth Signed

"Arthur Nikisch". May 18, 1911. 9.25" h x 7.25" w; matted with a total measurement of 11" h x 18" w. Overall condition very good (paper slightly faded on top from former framing; photo very slightly silvered).
An attractively-matted ensemble consisting of a period postcard photograph of the great Hungarian conductor and a 2-bar quote from his signature work, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Under the quote, above his signature and the date, Nickisch has added So pocht das Schicksal an unsere Pforte! (thus Fate knocks at our door!).
Roland Gellatt (The Fabulous Phonograph) observes that Nikisch's pioneering involvement with early recording was important; while his was not the first recording of Beethoven's Fifth, Nikisch's 1913 recording with the Berlin Philharmonic was the first by a named conductor.
