Kleeberg, Clotilda (1866-1909)
Autograph Musical Quotation Signed
"Clotilda Kleeberg". n.d. 6.25" h x 8" w. In fine condition. The French pianist has penned two-bars from Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor to Polish soprano known as Marya Freund but who was known as Mimi when a child. She was the niece of the Sir George Henschel and this is a page from the guest book of her family who were music patrons in Breslau. The inscription reads as a souvenir of the days of January 30, 31 and February 1 in Breslau where I will always be charmed by the… nice Henschel family, admired by artists. The bars have been completed in pencil by "RM" and another bar has been added by "B. M. G.". On the right is penned xx [?] A de Greef, in the hand of the noted Belgian pianist Arthur de Greef. Kleeberg married the Belgian sculptor Charles Samuel and the couple lived in Brussels. A most curious musical quotation.
The French pianist Clotilda Kleeberg was a child prodigy who performed her first concert in Paris in December 1878 in front of an audience of 4000 people. Camille Saint-Saëns considered her to be a brilliant pianist and Clara Schumann also commented favorably on her playing.
