Alfred Grünfeld was the most popular salon pianist in Vienna throughout the 1870s and 1880s, known as much for his playing as for his sociability and humor. When not performing solo, he often appeared with the Arnold Rosé Quartet, Hellmesberger Quartet, and alongside his cellist brother, Heinrich. Grünfeld was also a close friend of Johann Strauss and transcribed several of the composer's waltzes for piano, including the Frühlingsstimmen, which Strauss had dedicated to Grünfeld.
