Gottschalk, Louis Moreau (1829-1869)

Autograph Musical Quotation Signed

"L. M. Gottschalk". To Mr. Sinclair F-[?]. Feb 16, 1862. Total size in mat: 13.5" h x 9" w. Fine except for very slight crease under bars of music and slight marks on right corners from former mounting.
Attractive two-bar autograph musical quotation penned by the famous virtuoso American pianist-composer, handsomely matted with a nice and scarce lifetime lithograph of Gottschalk seated in front of a Chickering piano.
New Orleans-born Gottschalk traveled to Paris at age 13, where Chopin said Give me your hand, my child: I predict you will become a King of Pianists. He indeed became a superb pianist and composer and he led a very colorful life, was an ardent supporter of the Union cause during the American Civil War, even though he traveled extensively, especially in South America. He composed pieces including piano works which carry a legacy of slave music, considered the precursor of ragtime and jazz, earning him an important place in American musical history.
