"Luigi Arditi". January 20, 1880. Total size in mat: 11.75" h x 14" w. In fine condition.
A matted ensemble with an original contemporary sepia-toned carte de visite photo of the Italian violinist, composer, and opera conductor and an eight-bar quotation from his "Le Tortorelle" ("The Young Turtledoves"), a valse cantabile composed for and dedicated to the Hungarian soprano Etelka Gerster.
Arditi conducted opera throughout Italy and in 1846 travelled to Cuba to co-direct the opera orchestra in Havana with the famous double bass player Giovanni Bottesini. Their company made long tours of America, and he subsequently conducted operas in many cities with the Max Maretzek Italian Opera Company. He eventually moved to London, where he conducted the Royal Italian Opera Company.
