Poulenc has penned a two-bar quote from his ballet Les Biches, signing it in full and dating it the year of the work's premiere (1924). The quotation is on the verso of a photograph postcard showing a striking portrait of the young composer.
Commissioned by Diaghilev for the Ballet Russes, Poulenc wrote Les Biches in 1923 when he was just 24 years old. It premiered the following year in Monte Carlo to popular and critical acclaim. The ballet does not have a narrative, but rather depicts the interactions between a group of young people who attend a house party on a summer afternoon. It remains one of Poulenc's best-loved works.
