Vergerova had studied privately with Leschetizky, taught at the Imperial Conservatory in St. Petersburg where she recorded some Welte-Mignon player piano rolls, and moved to the United States in 1923, just one year later helping to found the Curtis Institute. She taught both there and at the Mannes College until her death. Among her many noted pupils were Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Lukas Foss, and Gary Graffman.
