Horszowski, Mieczyslav (1892-1993)

Autograph Letter Signed

"Mieczyslav Horszowski". To Giorgi Ciompi. March 30, 1973. Small stationery. 1 p, with envelope. Fine.
The Polish-American pianist writes a note in Italian to the violinist Giorgi Ciompi, stating that the entrance examinations at the Curtis Institute will be in April. He also gives a recommendation for his pupil Nina Schuman.
Horszowski's impeccable credentials stretched way back: he was first taught piano by his mother, who was a pupil of Karol Mikuli, who had himself been a pupil of Frédéric Chopin. Then, at age seven, he became a student of Theodor Leschetizky, who had studied with Beethoven's pupil Carl Czerny.

He immigrated to the United States during World War II and quickly became an important part of the musical scene. In 1954–1955, he gave a memorable cycle of Beethoven's entire solo piano works in New York and in 1960 he did the same for Mozart's piano sonatas. Nonetheless, his repertoire was large and included d'Indy, Martinů, Stravinsky, Szymanowski, and Villa-Lobos. In 1979 he recorded on a restored Cristofori (1655-1731) pianoforte owned by the Metropolitan Museum in New York, performing works by Lodovico Giustini which were the first known pieces specifically written for the pianoforte.
