Meyerbeer, Giacomo (1791-1864)

Autograph Letter Signed

"Meyerbeer". To Madame Célérier. Paris, April 19. 1 p. of folded sheet with Meyerbeer's embossed initials. With full translation. In excellent condition.
A letter from Meyerbeer to his Parisian agent Madame Célérier, confirming he has just arrived in Paris and will call on her tomorrow. He also makes a request: send me through the bearer of these lines the letters and newspapers which you could have received for me from Nice, at the same time asking you to be so good as to indicate to me in a single word how many letters there are, for I do not know sufficiently the person who will carry this message to you.

The composer's signature is bold and clear. He does not indicate the year.

Thérèse Célérier was the daughter of Louis Gouin, a postal official in Paris and Meyerbeer's agent and confidant in the city. Upon Louis' death, Thérèse assumed her father's responsibilities for the composer. The two became close friends and much of their correspondence survives. Meyer also makes regular mention of Célérier, her husband, and their daughter, Mathilde, in his diaries.
