This famous lullaby was written by Brahms in 1867-68 and first performed in 1869 by the singer Luise Dustmann with Clara Schumann at the piano. Immediately and continuously popular, the first edition for voice and piano appeared in 1868, and this version appeared along with at least five other instrumental arrangements within the subsequent decade.
