"Orpheus Charming The Animals".

The Netherlands, c. 1656-1660. Image: 8 " h x 12.50" w (20.4 cm x 31.8 cm). Total dimension in mat: c. 14" h x 18" w (35.6 cm x 45.7 cm). Trimmed to the plate, small abrasion on upper left (not visible in mat) but overall in very good condition.
Orpheus, the ancient Greek legendary hero endowed with great musical skills, is shown playing a lyra da braccio: a monkey holds a book of music at his feet while a variety of animals surround him listening to the music. Engraved by the Dutch painter Jan van Ossenbeeck after Leandro Bassano ( per British Museum: intermediary draughtsman was David Teniers the Younger, this being one from 246 plates of Teniers' Theatrum Pictorium). Signed in the lower margin: "Bassan P." and "4˝ Alta 6˝ Lata" and "v. Ho˙ d." and "ossenbeck f." (not visible in mat) Probably second state.
