Four bars of a treble-line passage from de Falla's popular work El Retablo de Maese Pedro for marionettes and singers. De Falla signs and inscribes the quotation in French to Mrs. J. Robert Hewitt at the moment of her visit to Grenada.
In 1919 Princess Edmond de Polignac commissioned de Falla for a piece that would make use of her private salon's puppet theater. De Falla chose to set an episode from Don Quixote that depicts a puppet play. The resulting work, El Retablo de Maese Pedro, is noted for its inventive orchestration, incorporation of seventeenth-century Spanish music, and colorful harmonies. It premiered in concert form in 1919 and received its first full public performance in 1923.AMQ-01616$1,250
