Stravinsky, Igor (1882-1971)

Typed Letter Signed

"I.Stravinsky". To "Doda Conrad". Hollywood, California, April 17, 1956. One small sheet of onionskin paper with personal letterhead. Very good (light creasing).
Stravinsky types a short note to express his willingness to contribute some music to a project in homage of the eightieth birthday of the recipient's mother, celebrated soprano Marya Freund: If time permits, I shall do so with joy. I just say "yes" because I have so much to do before I leave for Europe. No such piece materialized.
Marya Freund (1876-1966) was a Polish-born French soprano known especially for her interpretations of twentieth-century works.

The "hommage à Marya Freund" was truly an endeavor to cultivate. Dated 1956, it produced dozens of original manuscripts, musical quotations, and written sentiments, but in fact, no Stravinsky. According to Conrad, his mother's first remark after perusing the ensemble was "so where is Stravinsky?"
